Being married for 20 years is not a guarantee that you’re going to stay with your better half for the rest of your life. Just take a look at Dr. Dre and his wife, Nicole Young, who recently announced their divorce after more than two decades of being husband-and-wife.
Nicole filed for divorce and cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for her decision, several outlets reported. She is also asking for spousal support from the music personality.
Dre, whose real name is Andre Romelle Young, and his wife were last spotted together in February for the Tom Ford fashion show. They tied the knot in May 1996 and were blessed with two wonderful kids, 23-year-old Truice and 19-year-old Truly.
The audio engineer also fathered four kids from previous relationships – Tyra, La Tanya Danielle, Marcel, and Curtis. Andre Young Jr., his other son, died when he was 20 due to substance abuse. Nicole, meanwhile, was previously a Mrs. to Sedale Threatt.
No Prenup
Interestingly, Dre and Nicole had no prenup agreement. It is worth noting that the record executive has an estimated net worth of $800 million as of 2019, Forbes said. As such, he placed second on the list of the world’s richest hip-hop artists.
However, just before 2019 ended, his net worth ballooned to $950 million because of his lucrative and highly successful Beats Electronics company. This milestone made him the top earner of the decade, beating out singer Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Jay-Z.
Fortune
Before his nuptials with Nicole, Dre was already raking in money with his wise decisions. He is one of the founding members of N.W.A., a rap group. Then, under Death Row Records, he released his album ‘The Chronic’ in 1992.
Dre co-owned the label and later founded his own record label, Aftermath Entertainment. Then, he signed some of the most talented artists of this generation, 50 Cent and Eminem.
After his marriage with Nicole, Dre began veering his attention to producing for other musicians like The Game, 2Pac, Kendrick Lamar, and Snoop Dogg. The record executive then took on a venture in 2008 and put his first product, Beats by Dr. Dre, on the market.
It didn’t take too long before other companies began noticing the brand. Apple bought it for a whopping $3 billion in 2014.
Another Celeb Breakup
Dre and Nicole aren’t the first celebrity couple who decided to call it quits during the pandemic. Kelly Clarkson also filed for divorce from husband Brandon Blackstock, also citing irreconcilable differences.
The ‘American Idol’ alum and her manager were married for almost seven years and share two children, Remington Alexander and River Rose.
